Saturday 19th August - Saturday 26th August inclusive

The Sutton LTC Senior Open 2023 starts this weekend and runs until Saturday 26th (inclusive). Following the huge entry  in the tournament we are now starting matches on Friday night, 18th August.   With 392 entries across all events, at all standards, from Clubs throughout Ireland, we are looking forward to a fantastic week of tennis on our courts.

Matches are scheduled for 8pm on Friday 18th August following the completion of our Junior Championships Finals.   Sincere thanks to the organising committee for the Junior Champs who have brought forward their finals and presentation of prizes  to accommodate the use of the courts on Friday evening for the Senior Open matches.

Play will start at 9am on Saturday and Sunday and run until 9pm approx.  During the week matches will start at 6pm with 3 sessions: 6pm, 7.30pm and 9pm

We look forward to welcoming members to the club throughout the week to watch the matches and to avail of the specialist evenings that the Bar Committee have planned.  

An email will issue to members daily with the match schedule for that evening.

Tram Chowder will also be on site to provide their usual quality snacks and hot food.

Sutton  LTC Junior Championships 14th - 18th August

Another record breaking event at SLTC this week.   Our Junior Club Championships attracted an entry of 124 junior members of all ages.   

The courts have been a sea of blue as the players compete in their tournament t-shirts.  

With all to play for in the last two days of the event we would love to see parents and members come along to support the children in their matches for the closing stages of the tournament.

The finals take place on Friday afternoon from 1pm and the traditional Junior Champs BBQ will be at 4pm for all children that entered and played throughout the week.  The presentation will follow the BBQ when all matches are finished.

Fair Play Award

A new perpetual trophy for the Fair Play Award is being presented by the Quinn Family to honour Brendan and Dermot Quinn for their immense contribution to junior tennis in Sutton and nationally.  This trophy will be presented at the finals of the Junior Club Championships on Friday 18th August. Sincere thanks to the extended Quinn family for presenting this cup to the club in memory of two pillars of Irish tennis.

Generation Game -  Sunday 13th August 

Our junior club championships began last Sunday afternoon with the Generation Game.   60 players took part in this adult and child social event.  Tennis was followed by a BBQ and presentation of prizes.

Thank you to Ciaran McCarthy for organising the tennis and to Darrell Reamsbottom for manning the BBQ.

All matches are scheduled by the Tennis Committee from 6th September until Finals Day on Saturday 16th September. All finalists must be available to play finals on Saturday 16th September. Join us on Thursday 7th Sept for a Tie-break Tens event which is included in entry . Followed by a Consolation Event on Thursday 14th September for first round losers

After a sell-out Wimbledon and Mundy evening, we will end the Championship fortnight with our annual At Home BBQ on Saturday 16th September, and for the first time in a long time, a DISCO with the legendary DJ Billy Scurry. Tickets €25 on sale through smartclub via the following link

The draws for the Handicap events will be published this weekend.   The draws will also be available on a noticeboard in the Lounge extension.

Summer Programme

Our summer programme has been buzzing all summer with kids aged 5 to 15 all having the craic on court and playing loads of tennis.  It will continue until Friday 1st September so lots more to come over the next 2 weeks - so make sure to get down!

Lara Collier will be taking over as Junior Steward and running  the Summer Programme as Ciaran McCarthy returns to College in the US to continue his tennis scholarship.      Lara is a familiar face to all our juniors who attend Saturday match plays and she will  be getting everything going on the courts. We also have a junior WhatsApp group where we send out info about what's going on.

September Junior Tennis Coaching Programme 

Our September Coaching Programme starts off the week of September 11th. The first phase of the classes that will be released will be our junior red, orange and green ball classes along with some u12 and u14 yellow ball classes. This is for juniors of all levels who wish to come to 1 or 2 sessions per week. Our first term is a 7-week term until the week of October 24th

If you have any outstanding invoices, you will not be able to sign up for a coaching class. Please sign up for classes appropriate to age and level. Players may be moved if not in the correct class.

Our next phase of classes will be advertised later this week and will include our Tournament players programme, teenage classes and Adult classes including cardio tennis and league training. 

We would like to welcome Victoria Gaidau to our coaching team. Victoria has over 12 years coaching experience here in Ireland between Elm Park, Sandycove and Galway Lawn Tennis Club. As a junior she was the top ranked player in Moldova and top 5 in Romania.

We are sad to see Isobel O' Flaherty and Conor McKenna move on. Both are moving abroad to further their studies. A huge thank you from all of us for the time and dedication they gave to our programme over the last few years.

Please see the hooks now provided for our clay court drag mats. Please leave them on the hooks after use to protect the bristles. 

If any member notices any issues with the courts ie broken net bands etc please report the fault to the office and it will be repaired.

SATURDAY SOCIAL SQUASH

Open to all members, drop down from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. to hit with others every Saturday. Meet new people to play Squash.

CONSIDERING SENIOR SQUASH LEAGUE

Each year we enter Senior Squash League Teams in the Leinster Squash Leagues Competition. Sutton pride themselves in the fact that we have committed and strong league teams and featured for many years in the winning circle.

Covid played a part in a fall off but we hope to return to our strength and plan to enter teams in the League for September/October. 

Men's Teams are made up of 5 players and Ladies 4 players. It is a great opportunity to compete as a team in such an individual sport. Matches are Home and Away throughout Leinster and run until approximately March/April and it is followed by Cup Competition, which is a knockout system. 

It is important to get commitments from players who will make themselves available for the matches each week both home and away. There are many divisions of different standards from Premier to Division 6.

I will be sending out an email soon to gauge interest and I hope we get lots. Keep an eye out and if you have any questions drop in and chat to me.

Gym Staff News

We welcome Elena as one of our new Fitness Instructors. Elena will be full time in the gym alongside Kieran who will be staying on as manager. They are joined by part time staff Dan, Ronan & Jonah.

Farewell
