Dermot Quinn's 'My Serve – The Story of Sutton Lawn Tennis Club' Book Launch on 9 November
Dear members,
A presentation to mark the publication of 'My Serve – The Story of Sutton Lawn Tennis Club', written by Dermot Quinn will take place in the Clubhouse on Wednesday 9 November at 8.30pm. All members of the Club would be very welcome.
This is an opportunity to acknowledge the special contribution of Dermot to the success of our Club.
The book has many interesting facts including the connection with the St Lawrence family of Howth Castle, to when the management committee consisted of 10 of the total of 18 Senior members, how the Club became a leader in tennis and squash, how the high standard of a Sutton Tennis player gave rise to the (strange) format for the floodlight league, the Club’s first squash activity on 2nd December 1974 and how over the years different volunteers played a key role.
The book provides an account (in 300 pages) of events from the foundation of the Club in 1882. Copies will be available to purchase from the launch date.
If you could please confirm your attendance by emailing the office in advance at info@suttonltc.comChanging Rooms Upgrade - Works commencing Thursday 10 November
Dear members,
We would just like to advise you that we will be upgrading both Ladies and Gents changing room in the coming weeks. Works will commence on Thursday 10 November and will go on for the following 7 weeks.
Unfortunately, there will be no changing room or shower facilities for the members during that period.
We are confident that the new upgraded changing rooms will be well worth the wait.
Your patience and understanding during the process is truly appreciated.Airhall booking policy and bye law changes
Dear Members,
Just a reminder of the rules which came into force for Airhall bookings from Monday 31 October onwards.
The Airhall is a wonderful resource for the Club, and is in high demand. In order to promote opportunities for wider and fairer usage of the Airhall when Bradshaw 1 and 2 are covered during the winter months, the Management Committee have approved the following:
• Members are permitted a maximum of 3 hours of play per week
• A week is defined as Monday to Sunday inclusive
• Court usage counts for all members are reset each Monday
• A member cannot play in two consecutive time slots even if the time slots are booked by an opponent in singles or separate players from a doubles partnership
• Members must name all players on their court bookings and the member making the booking must be on court
• Coaches to appear in the booking system as “Coach Jane Smith” to provide transparency to members
Players are requested to respect their fellow members and adhere to this policy for the winter months. The policy has been incorporated into the Tennis Court Booking Bye-Laws section of the Club constitution.
Bookings will be reviewed for infringements on a regular basis based on booking data extracts. The following sanctions will apply for infringements of the rules:
• Infringement 1: Warning by email, followed up by telephone.
• Infringement 2: Member loses all booking and playing privileges for 1 week (no access to tennis, squash or gym).
• Infringement 3: Member loses all booking and playing privileges for 1 month (no access to tennis, squash or gym).
• Infringement 4: Member will be a subject of a formal complaint for breach of club rules which will be referred to the Club Hearings Committee who may consider additional sanctions.
Members please note - limitations of the MyCourts booking system do not allow:
• automated checking of booking counts at time of booking
• restriction of booking privileges to tennis courts only
To report an issue regarding the Airhall, members should email the Club at Airhall@suttonltc.com. If a last-minute substitute is required for a doubles game in the Airhall, this should be reported by the booking member in an email to the above address.
Please take note of the revised Peak and Off-Peak hours as set out below.
Peak Hours for the Airhall:
- Monday - Thursday: 9.00am to 10.00pm
- Friday: 9.00am to 8.00pm
- Weekends and Bank Holidays: 9.00am to 6.00pm
Off-Peak Hours for the Airhall:
- Monday - Sunday: 7.00am to 9.00am
- Monday - Thursday: 10.00pm to 11.00pm
- Friday: 8.00pm to 11.00pm
- Weekends and Bank Holidays: 6.00pm to 11.00pm
These rules came into force for Airhall bookings from Monday 31 October onwards.
Yours in tennis,
Linda and AjayElva’s Thank You Note
Dear members,
Thank you so much to everyone who were able to attend my retirement party and for the many lovely gifts and messages I received. As you know I so enjoyed working in the Club and making such lovely friends. I don’t think I ever had a day when I thought ‘oh no not another day at work’ - in truth I never had the time!!I had intended reading out at the retirement party a lovely essay entitled Love Monkey by Edward Monkton which was recited at my nephews recent wedding but it is a little long and the attention span ............. but it sort of encapsulates my thoughts of all you lovely people,
My grateful thanks once again and I do hope to ‘pop in’ every now and then to say Hello that’s if The Boss allows it !!
Best wishes to you all
Elva

Thanks to all the coaches of the other clubs, the parents and of course the players who supported the event.

Coaches Corner
“Casino”
This game focuses on building your rally game. The game is played to 100 points. Play a point but count the rally. If the rally is for example 10 shots long the winner gets 10 points making the score 10 - 0. In the next rally the opponent may win a point last 21 shots now making the score 10-21. This should teach you patience as the longer the rally the more points you get.
